The History of Sparklers

Sparklers are used for many occasions including weddings, parties, graduations, and all different types of celebrations.  Where did they come from and how did sparklers come to be?

The Beginning

Fireworks originated in China around the 7th century AD and quickly became a part of almost every Chinese celebration.  The first fireworks were bamboo shoots that were filled with gunpowder that produced a large explosion and sparks.  The Chinese soon discovered that dipping the bamboo shoots into a slurry of gunpowder produced the sparks without the explosion.  Over time the Chinese started to experiment with different slurries and creating different effect and colors.

Modern Times

The current version of sparklers with metal rods originated out of Germany around 1850.  This version was a steel metal wire coated in iron and gunpowder.  This advancement allowed sparklers to be cheaper, more easily mass produced, and more reliable.

Current Times

During the 19th century chemistry and technology advanced sparklers even further.  Sparklers are now brighter, longer lasting, and safer.  Check out our sparklers and see the dazzle.
